Center of Excellence in Fisheries
The Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology has always been supportive of the studies and promotion of Philippine languages. Hence, in support and in celebration of the Buwan ng mga Wika, the College participated in the 15th Philippine Linguistics Congress, held on August 23-25, 2023 at the University of the Philippines Diliman through the participation of our two faculty members from the English Department.
On the second day of the Congress, Dr. Abee M. Eijansantos presented a paper on the syntax of modality and mode in serial verb construction of Zamboanga Chavacano, while Dr. Gefilloyd L. De Castro presented a corpus-based paper on the Zamboanga Chavacano orthographic variations.
The Philippine Linguistics Congress is an international conference that focuses on current advances in the scientific study of language, which may be in the realm of theoretical or applied linguistics, as well as on the application of linguistic theory to other fields of study done in the context of the Philippines. It provides a venue for researchers to share their studies on various linguistic phenomena and language issues in the Philippines, and comparative studies between Philippine languages and other foreign languages to promote deeper understanding of these languages and explore possible implications for language learning, translation, and cross-cultural communication.
The 15PLC serves as one of the highlights of the centennial founding anniversary of the UP Department of Linguistics. The event will feature plenary sessions on the major developments of key research areas of the Department, namely (1) language documentation and description, (2) historical and comparative linguistics, (3) language and culture, (4) Filipino as the national language of the Philippines, and (5) teaching the national languages of Asia.
