On August 13, 2024, the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) hosted a round table discussion at the Conference Room, ZSCMST. This event was part of the USAID-EDC Opportunity 2.0, a collaborative effort aimed at supporting vulnerable out-of-school youth who aspire to pursue second-chance education programs.

The discussion focused on the HERO (Higher-level Education or Training Readiness Orientation) program, which is designed to prepare Filipino youth for higher-level formal education. HERO provides guidance on various aspects including admission processes, funding mechanisms, academic track or strand selection, and choosing appropriate academic institutions. The lead facilitator of the HERO Program implementation is through the National Service Training Program (NSTP) students of the ZSCMST.

The event was graced by, Mr. Mirshariff Tillah, Senior Education Adviser USAID; Mr. Justin Modesto, Project Management Specialist USAID; Ms. Marillen Ronquillo, Administrative Assistant USAID; and representatives from Opportunity 2.0, Ms. Jill Jarvi, Ms. Theresa Mokamad, and Mr. Hayden Bale. Also present were Dr. Gloria Carpio and Dr. Elga Z. Jarlega from the Department of Education (DepEd), Dr. Rachel D. Lauriaga, Vice President for Academic Affairs ZSCMST; Mr. Roderick D. Trio, Vice President for Student Affairs ZSCMST; Reynelsa “Van” Tumanda, Head of NSTP; as well as NSTP faculty members and HERO volunteers.

This collaboration aims to ensure that these youth receive comprehensive support and guidance through their journey towards higher education, making a significant impact on their educational and career prospects.
